India’s Top 10 Companies by Market Cap: What NSE Data Reveals

By The Ledger Editorial BoardPublished Just now

India’s equity market has undergone a major structural transformation over the past two decades. Official data from the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) shows that the country’s largest listed companies have expanded substantially in market value, while the composition of the top tier has also changed. Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India, Infosys, ITC, Hindustan Unilever and Larsen & Toubro were among the companies occupying the top 10 market-capitalisation positions in NSE’s FY2024 analysis. More recent NSE index data continues to show strong representation from financial services, technology, telecom, consumer businesses, infrastructure and energy.

India’s largest companies reflect a changing economy

Market capitalisation is one of the most widely used measures for understanding the size of a listed company. It represents the market value of a company’s outstanding equity and changes with its share price and share count.

For India, market capitalisation also provides a useful lens into how the economy has evolved.

According to an NSE Market Pulse analysis published in 2025, the combined market capitalisation of the top 10 companies increased from around ₹3 lakh crore in FY2004 to approximately ₹22 lakh crore in FY2014 and ₹89 lakh crore in FY2024. NSE noted that the top 10 companies accounted for nearly half of the overall market capitalisation in FY2004, while their share had declined to around 23% by FY2024 as more companies were listed and mid- and small-cap companies expanded.

This change is important because it shows that India's equity market is becoming broader rather than being dominated by only a handful of companies.

The top 10 companies in NSE’s FY2024 snapshot

NSE’s analysis identified the following FY2024 top 10 companies by market capitalisation:

  1. Reliance Industries Ltd.
  2. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.
  3. HDFC Bank Ltd.
  4. ICICI Bank Ltd.
  5. Bharti Airtel Ltd.
  6. State Bank of India
  7. Infosys Ltd.
  8. ITC Ltd.
  9. Hindustan Unilever Ltd.
  10. Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

This is a FY2024 historical snapshot, not a claim that these are the exact top 10 companies on September 19, 2026. Market capitalisation changes continuously with market prices and corporate actions. NSE itself maintains market-capitalisation information and publishes periodic datasets and index information.

1. Reliance Industries

Reliance Industries remained at the top of NSE’s FY2024 top-10 analysis. NSE's historical analysis also found that Reliance had been the number-one company in both FY2004 and FY2024.

The company illustrates how the value of a large Indian corporation can evolve as its business portfolio changes across energy, consumer businesses, telecommunications and digital services.

NSE reported that Reliance’s market capitalisation increased from ₹75,132 crore in FY2004 to around ₹20 lakh crore in FY2024, representing a more than 26-fold increase over the period.

2. Tata Consultancy Services

Tata Consultancy Services represents the scale of India's information-technology sector.

TCS entered the top 10 during the period covered by NSE's analysis and occupied the second position in FY2024. Its presence demonstrates the increasing importance of technology and global services in India's listed corporate landscape.

3. HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank has been one of India's largest financial companies by market value.

NSE's more recent index data continues to show HDFC Bank among the largest companies in India's equity universe. In the April 2026 factsheet for the Nifty500 Multicap 50:25:25 Index, HDFC Bank had the largest constituent weight at 4.25%, followed by Reliance Industries at 3.47%.

4. ICICI Bank

ICICI Bank represents the expanding importance of private-sector banking in India's capital markets.

The bank ranked fourth in NSE's FY2024 top-10 market-capitalisation table. It also remained one of the largest constituents in the April 2026 NSE index data, showing the continuing significance of financial services in India's large-cap market.

5. Bharti Airtel

Bharti Airtel is the telecom representative among the leading companies.

Its position in the top 10 highlights how connectivity has become a major component of India's corporate economy. In NSE's April 2026 Nifty500 Multicap data, Bharti Airtel remained among the largest constituents by index weight.

6. State Bank of India

State Bank of India provides a different perspective on India's corporate landscape because of its scale and public-sector ownership.

SBI was sixth in NSE's FY2024 top-10 market-capitalisation analysis. The company has also remained a significant constituent of broad NSE indices.

7. Infosys

Infosys is another major technology company represented in India's largest listed businesses.

NSE's historical analysis found Infosys consistently represented among the top companies in FY2004, FY2014 and FY2024. Its long-term presence demonstrates the sustained role of India's technology-services industry in the stock market.

8. ITC

ITC's position demonstrates the continued market value of diversified consumer businesses.

The company appeared among the top 10 in all three historical periods examined by NSE—FY2004, FY2014 and FY2024.

9. Hindustan Unilever

Hindustan Unilever represents India's large consumer-goods sector.

The company was second in the FY2004 snapshot and remained among the top 10 in FY2024. Its movement illustrates that the composition of India's largest companies can change significantly even when a company continues to maintain a substantial market value.

10. Larsen & Toubro

Larsen & Toubro brings infrastructure, engineering and capital goods into the top tier.

Its appearance in the FY2024 top 10 is significant because India's listed-market leadership is not limited to technology, banking, consumer goods and energy. Large infrastructure and engineering companies also occupy an important position in the market.

What has changed in India's top companies?

The most interesting part of the NSE data is not simply the list of names. It is the change in the structure of the list.

NSE found that five companies that were among the top 10 in FY2004 were no longer in the top 10 by FY2014. Some companies subsequently returned, while companies such as TCS, HDFC Bank and others became increasingly important.

The data therefore shows that market leadership is not permanent.

A company can remain operationally large while its market-cap ranking changes because another company grows faster, share prices change, new businesses are listed or corporate structures evolve.

Financial services remain a major force

The latest NSE index data also provides insight into sector concentration.

In the April 2026 Nifty500 Multicap 50:25:25 factsheet, financial services represented 28.78% of the index, followed by capital goods at 8.98%, healthcare at 8.12%, automobile and auto components at 7.17% and oil, gas and consumable fuels at 6.31%. Information technology represented 5.83%.

This indicates that India's largest listed businesses increasingly represent a broad combination of banking, technology, infrastructure, consumer demand, telecom, healthcare and industrial activity.

India’s market is becoming broader

Another important finding from NSE is the declining concentration of the top 10 companies.

The top 10 accounted for nearly 50% of total market capitalisation in FY2004 but approximately 23% in FY2024. NSE attributed this change partly to the increase in listed companies and the stronger performance of mid- and small-cap companies over the period.

The Nifty 500 provides another measure of this breadth. NSE says the Nifty 500 represents about 92.04% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on the NSE, based on data as of March 30, 2026.

What the data means for India’s corporate economy

The evolution of India's largest companies reveals three broad trends.

First, scale is increasing. The market value of India's leading companies has grown dramatically over the past two decades.

Second, leadership is changing. Companies that dominated the market in one period do not necessarily occupy the same position in another.

Third, the market is becoming more diversified. Banking, technology, telecom, consumer businesses, infrastructure, healthcare, automobiles and energy all have significant representation.

NSE's own analysis also points to further potential for the Indian capital market as more companies access public markets.

India's largest listed companies provide a useful window into the country's economic transformation. Reliance Industries, TCS, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bharti Airtel, SBI, Infosys, ITC, Hindustan Unilever and Larsen & Toubro represented the FY2024 top 10 in NSE's historical market-capitalisation analysis.

But the larger story is the changing composition of India's corporate leaders. The country's stock market has expanded substantially, the concentration of value among the biggest companies has declined, and new sectors and businesses have gained importance.

For investors, researchers and businesses studying corporate India, market capitalisation is therefore more than a ranking. It is a snapshot of where the market places value—and how that value changes as India's economy, companies and industries evolve.
